The Edge Hotel pub, early 1900s.
The Edge is to the left with the old car parked outside. Right is
Thompson's General Dealers. The middle building is West Pitts colliery
offices....
|
....and the same view today. The
old shop and the colliery offices are now private housing but the
view is essentially unchanged.

The Royal, another pub, early 1900s.
The Royal is the middle building....
|
....and the same view today. Transport
methods may have changed but little else is different.

Looking west along the village from
The Edge Hotel (right, out of picture). The building with the notice
board attached was then the village police house. Notice the unmade
road in the foreground....
|
....and the same view today. There
is no longer a police house in the village and the roads are somewhat
different but again the view is recognisable.

Looking west along the village's
only street, early 1900s. Woodland Fell, an extensive area of moorland
can be seen in the background....
|
....and the same view today. The
cemetery now contains a war memorial, visible to the centre/right
of the picture.

|
Woodland Mission Church (St. Mary's),
a corrugated iron church erected at the turn of the century (see 'Village
History' page)....
|
....and the same view today. The
original bell is still in use and was cast in Woodland Back Pit (see
'Village History' page).
